Storm Water

Protecting Lawndale’s Stormwater and Oceans

The quality of stormwater — the rainwater that flows into our oceans, lakes, and rivers — is regulated by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit. The City of Lawndale participates as a co-permittee under this federal program to help protect our waterways.

Storm drains located beneath our city streets are designed to carry rainwater away quickly to prevent flooding. However, unlike water that enters the sanitary sewer system (which is treated and filtered before being reused or released), stormwater flows directly to the ocean without treatment.

As stormwater travels over streets and other surfaces, it can pick up pollutants such as:

  • Pesticides and fertilizers

  • Automotive fluids (oil, antifreeze, etc.)

  • Construction materials and debris

  • Yard waste and litter

These pollutants are carried through the storm drain system and end up in the ocean, affecting water quality and marine life.

How You Can Help Keep Our Beaches Clean

Everyone in our community can play a part in preventing stormwater pollution:

  • Keep streets and public areas free of litter

  • Wash vehicles at a commercial car wash (where water is properly treated)

  • Maintain vehicles regularly to prevent oil leaks

  • Pick up and dispose of pet waste properly

Together, we can help protect Lawndale’s environment and keep our local beaches clean and healthy.
